US 2009-05-05T11:30:14-06:00 The Salida Golf Club was started in 1926 when a golf professional from Colorado Springs, Emmitt Killian, was asked to lay out a golf course on the mesa. The original routing and green sites remain to this day, with the only significant changes being tee boxes, bunkers, trees and an irrigation system that was installed in the 80's. The greens are small and fast, there is water on eight of the holes, and the usual pace is two hours for nine holes. The course is on a slope, but is easy to walk. Trees define each fairway but are not numerous enough to lose your ball in them. Collected underground and piped 5 miles from the source high in the majestic Rocky Mountains, this sparkling clear and odorless water was originally enjoyed by the Ute Indians. It flows continually into the various Salida Hot Springs pools, refreshing and warming them naturally. Colorado's largest indoor hot springs pool facility. This 1937 WPA project employed some 200 men for digging and laying the original pipeline and constructing the buildings. The facility, including the water line, has been updated several times over the years.. A 25 meter, 6 lane pool dominates a large portion of the building. At approximately 84° - 86° this pool is delightful for swimming, diving and recreational play. Two lap lanes are usually available. Across a divider wall, a smaller 4 foot deep pool holds water at approximately 95° - 100°. The zero depth entry provides easy access. Introduction: Every Morning We will begin our workshop with a discussion on the following items: Passive solar building How to read plans A checklist of items that will need to be considered before the building process can begin. Plans Architectural engineering Low embodied energy-building practices Infrastructure; Sewer, septic, water, electric Active and passive solar Embodied energy and Energy star. Building components: Passive and active solar Different building styles Plans and engineering Green building considerations Moisture Heating, cooling, electrical, and plumbing Plastering options: Playing with earth and lime. Repairs. Tire foundation: A tire footer/ foundation [R.E.U. or rammed earth unit] Is an Excellent means of providing a wide stable foundation on which to build a Strawbale building. This technique has been chosen to limit our embodied energy footprint. It is engineered, and I have successfully used this technique on 3 of my homes that have been accepted by our building dept., which uses the I.B.C. codes. We will also cover how you may use a standard concrete footer foundation. Floor Prep Here you will have an opportunity to see what goes into a floor before the adobe/concrete is poured. In floor radiant heat, passive solar convective floor, under-slab plumbing, insulation and additional mass will be some of the things covered. All this would apply to adobe floors as well. Framing The participant will learn the framing detail we use for a post and beam Strawbale infill structure including truss details as well as plumbing and electrical concerns. Straw –Stacking This is all about stacking, filling, and cutting straw. You will see window and door buck installation as well as framing, plumbing, electrical and roofing considerations. Strawbale Plaster Preparation This will cover all the details that are involved with preparing the house for interior and exterior plaster. This will give you an opportunity to see all the phases of construction up to this point after which will be forever hidden. Natural plasters, Paints, and Floors: June 5-11 2010 Seven days of playing with mud Natural plasters and paints are suitable and often the proper application for almost every environment and compatible with almost any substrate including but not limited to Brick, Stone, Log, Drywall, Plywood, and especially Straw and Adobe. Natural plasters and paints are low in VOC’s, and Toxicity; are easy to use, repair, and cheap to make from scratch. In this Workshop we will be making plasters and paints from scratch and the participant will have a strong base of understanding the application and rendering of these Materials.. We will be discussing the history and practibility of these materials as well as sources for premade products. Cost: $750 per person with half down non-refundable deposit. The donations will remain the same. Come prepared to work ie: work gloves, work boots, proper clothing. Keep in mind this is Colorado at 7,000 plus feet. Bring layers and any tools that you find appropriate. You will be responsible for your own food and lodging. Bring your own lunch for lunchtime is an excellent opportunity for open discussion. Itinerary: We will be plastering a small out building from the ground up. This building will be a Tire and Strawbale hybrid. Using Tires as a footer/foundation to get above grade and straw once we have gotten above grade. Work starts at 9:00am. We will take the time necessary to orient you to the job site and what we did to get to this phase of construction. All discussions will be ongoing! Strawbale Plaster Preparation This will cover all the details that are involved with preparing the house for interior and exterior plaster. Exterior Plaster Preparation Earthen base coat, Lime top coat, rendering and application. Interior Plaster Interior Earthen / Adobe plaster base coat, finish coat and finishes, ie: Linseed oil, Alise, and Coloring. Possibly Tadelakt. Rendering and application. Adobe Floor: Preparation, rendering, and application. Natural Home Tour: There are many Strawbale, and hybrid homes within a few miles of each other; as well as Adobe, Earthship, and others. Salida has many great homes to see. You may pick a day or days during the week of that phase of construction to attend. REGISTRATION FORMS CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE About the Instructors: Greg Walter, a retired Telemark Ski Bum, has been involved in construction on and off since 1978 and has been specifically dedicated to alternative construction methods since 1994. “I am very dedicated to the exploration and development of sustainable construction methods. Specifically; building with tire and Strawbale and working with natural materials. It is my belief that the home of the future will be of recycled and natural materials that have a low amount of embodied energy, using appropriate technologies that result in a very efficient, self-sustaining home.” He and his wife live off the grid on a remote piece of property [Located 10 miles from Salida] that they have been developing from scratch since 1994.On his land Greg installed gravity fed spring and well lines, septic system, and solar electric, at the same time restoring a homestead cabin built in 1907 and building a Tire / Strawbale addition housing the bathroom and kitchen. Some of his experience include: Complete site design including installation of septic, gravity fed well and spring and all other infrastructure concerns. Greg is currently working on his 8th alternative building project including 2 tire and Strawbale homes, and is well versed in many aspects of building with tire and straw from the ground up. When I was 10 years old or so I remember the need to decide on my favorite color. Even then I was subject to practical thinking, so in my thought process I remember deciding that what I loved the most was the earth and the prominent color in my mind was GREEN. I have built 8 Strawbale Homes and numerous other straw projects. Three of these homes have tire footer / foundations and the last home was energy star rated and is a near net zero home. All of my homes have been built with permits and according to the International Building Codes. My Wife and I live in my first home, which is an “off grid” Tire/Strawbale hybrid and is the site of our workshops. As a general contractor of Strawbale homes I have developed an intimate relationship with our local building dept, Local banks and insurance companies and have therefore developed incite in dealing with these various entities. All of my homes are primarily passive solar Terri Dunn (wife of Greg) is an ECO-Broker with Pinon Real Estate Group in Salida and Greg's #1 helper on the job site. Terri has 3 grown boys and now 5 grandchildren, too! She lives with Greg in a Strawbale/restored Cabin (Off-Grid) home in the mountains. US 2009-06-13T18:34:37-06:00 The Historic Turner Farm was purchased by Buena Vista Heritage in order to restore the old apple farm to a "living museum" of the early 1900 vintage. Work on the grounds has been completed. Restoration work on the historic buildings is underway, funded by private donations and grants from the Colorado State Historic Fund. The farm features about 50 apple trees and five buildings: the two-story farm house, the "mother-in-law cabin," the homestead cabin, the garage/workshop and the barn/tack room. The farm is open Saturdays through mid-August, from 4 to 8 p.m., with concerts on the farmhouse porch at 6:30 p.m. Concerts are included in the price of admission ($5 adults, $3 member adults, $1 kids 6-16, $10 families, free for little ones and members.)
